MEET JAY

Jay Steiger is a devoted parent, educator, and candidate for the Grossmont Union High School District Board in Trustee Area 2. With strong ties to our community, Jay's journey began right here, attending La Mesa-Spring Valley schools and proudly graduating from Monte Vista High School. He holds a Bachelor's degree from UCSD, possesses multiple teaching credentials, and has engaged in postgraduate studies at SDSU.

As a single parent, Jay's dedication to education extends to his two children, who also attended La Mesa-Spring Valley and Grossmont Union High School District schools. His family's commitment to education runs deep, as both of his parents attended local schools and pursued careers in education. Before transitioning into teaching, Jay gained valuable experience in the software industry and spent eight years working at the La Mesa Trader Joe's, where he connected with the community every day.

Grounded in his parents' values, Jay has embraced the importance of service and has been an active volunteer in our community since his children entered school. Jay has served as PTA President at Murdock Elementary and as a PTA officer for several local and county PTA organizations. He was the La Mesa-Spring Valley and Grossmont Union High School District Advisory Council Chair and Citizen's Bond Oversight Committee Chair, Board member for the Casa De Oro Alliance, and La Mesa Arts Foundation.

Currently, Jay is a Board Member of the Grossmont Mt. Helix Improvement Association and Vice-Chair of the Valle De Oro Community Planning Group. Jay also teaches 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies and the Student Government ASB class at Meadowbrook Middle School.

Jay's dedication to education revolves around the concept of inclusion for all students and staff. He's committed to ensuring that each student enjoys educational opportunities rooted in a contemporary curriculum, including arts and various electives, in addition to core academic subjects. He firmly believes in teaching students based on facts and fostering critical thinking skills to research and analyze information.

Jay envisions stronger ties between the GUHSD and the K-8 feeder districts, as well as the Grossmont Community College District. He recognizes the immense potential in dual enrollment classes, creating dynamic partnerships between high schools and community colleges. His experience on the bond committee has underscored the significance of facility projects and upgrades. Jay is committed to supporting a future bond program to guarantee that our youth and educational staff have access to outstanding school facilities.

Jay has started his campaign for the GUHSD Board early because extremists have targeted school boards as a primary battleground for the 2024 election. We urgently need individuals on the GUHSD board who will prioritize students' well-being and education over extremist policies that could harm our community.
